The first desert motorway in China, the Yulin-Jinbian Motorway with a total investment of 1.817 billion Yuan was open to traffic on 22nd, August, after 3 years construction. Recently, the greening work along the road has been completed and it will become a Green Corridor in the desert.
Yu-Jin motorway stretches from Yulin city (in Shaanxi) to Jinbian county (in Shaanxi) with a total construction mileage of 134km. It was designed to be along the ancient Great Wall and most of the sections will pass through Maowusu Desert.
The construction of Yu-Jin Motorway started in 12, 1999. Technicians took measures to prevent and trap sand and wind, and keep the road surface from being damaged by icing caused by the great temperature difference between winter and summer big in the desert. After being examined, it shows that the quality is fairly good and this provides first-hand technology information for the construction and maintenance of desert motorway in our country.
Yu-Jin motorway is also an important component of the west thoroughfare A (rongqi) -Bei (hai) motorway that is planned to be built. It links with the ShanGanNing Gas Field in the west and with the Shenfudongshen Coalfield (one of the seven biggest coalfields in the world) and coal base of south Shaanxi in the east. It will facilitate the construction of the Yulin national base of energy sources and heavy chemical industry aiming to fulfill the strategy of transferring the gas, electricity and coals from west to east, which helps to transform the advantages of energy resources into economic advantages. And it also serves to drive forward the regional economic development and development of the Wester Region.
