"China National Expressway Framework will be mainly formed in the next five yeas", announced by Li Shenglin, New Minister of Communications of China on the 2006 Annual National Conference on Transportation and Communication on January15, 2006.

According to Li, about 24,000km mileage of new motorways will be constructed in the next five years. By that time the total mileage of motorway in China will have reached 65,000km, and the framework of China's National Expressway Network will be mainly completed.

China's motorway construction started in 1988 and stepped into a fully construction period in 1998. The motorways constructed from year 2000 to 2005 are 24,700km, which is 1.5 times of that of the previous ten years. With 6,700km of new motorways completed in 2005, the totaly mileage of motorway in China has topped 41,000km, maintaining the second in the world.
